Liz Bruns, MD, MS

Board Certified Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist

I graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in Public Policy before working as a community organizer, criminal investigator, and dog walker. I eventually attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) – University of California Berkeley (UCB) Joint Medical Program where I received my Medical Doctorate and Masters of Science in Health and Medical Sciences, and subsequently completed my General Adult Psychiatry internship and residency at UCSF with distinguished training in LGBTQ Psychiatry.

In 2022 I completed the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. I am in the process of obtaining certification in Integrative Gestalt and Hologenic Connected Breathwork through the Holloman Institute, and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy through the Ketamine Training Center.

My past research has asked how care improves when physicians consider the whole person in their care rather than treating syndromes, especially when addressing both acute and chronic pain. I’ve been honored to receive several awards for my clinical care, teaching, and writing.

In addition to Waterbird, I am a staff psychiatrist at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and volunteer clinical faculty within the UCSF Department of Psychiatry.
